This 4-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes is perfect for travelers seeking a truly immersive Sahara experience. From camel trekking across golden dunes to overnight stays in luxury desert camps, this journey takes you deep into Morocco’s dramatic landscapes and rich Berber culture.
Begin your adventure with a drive through the stunning High Atlas Mountains, visit the iconic Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, and explore the cinematic town of Ouarzazate. Continue through lush valleys and rugged gorges before arriving at the majestic dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga.
Beyond sandboarding and stargazing, you’ll meet local nomadic families, explore hidden desert villages, listen to traditional Gnawa music, and marvel at the beauty of Ziz Valley and the cedar forests on your way to Fes. This tour promises unforgettable moments and authentic encounters every step of the way.
Your tour begins with a morning pick-up from your accommodation in Marrakech. Travel through the winding roads of the High Atlas Mountains, with stops to admire panoramic views and traditional Berber villages.
Your first major visit is to Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village and UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its stunning architecture and appearances in famous films such as Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Prince of Persia.
After lunch, the journey continues through Ouarzazate (the “Hollywood of Africa”) and the Valley of Roses before reaching the Dades Gorge. Here, you’ll visit the unique rock formations known as the "monkey fingers" and settle into your accommodation for dinner and the night.
After breakfast, head toward Todra Gorge, a dramatic canyon with towering limestone cliffs reaching up to 300 meters. Enjoy a walk through the gorge before continuing to Merzouga.
En route, your guide may offer a stop at a traditional Berber shop to try on local clothing and learn about desert crafts. This stop is optional, and you’re free to skip it.
Arriving in Merzouga, you'll take a camel ride across the Erg Chebbi dunes to witness a spectacular desert sunset. Afterward, arrive at your luxury desert camp where you can enjoy sandboarding, a traditional Moroccan dinner, Berber music by the campfire, and a peaceful night under the stars.
Wake early to watch the sunrise from the top of a dune—a breathtaking moment you won’t want to miss. After breakfast, begin your desert exploration with a 4x4 tour of the Erg Chebbi area.
Highlights include a visit to a nomadic Berber family, the abandoned French mining village of Mefis, and the village of Khamlia, where you’ll enjoy live Gnawa music. If in season, visit Lake Dayet Srij, home to desert birds like flamingos.
After lunch, return to your hotel or riad in Merzouga for a relaxing evening. You can also choose to spend a second night in the desert camp if preferred.
After breakfast, begin your journey to Fes. Along the way, stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the lush Ziz Valley, known for its palm groves and traditional Berber settlements.
Pass through Midelt, where you’ll enjoy lunch, and continue through the Middle Atlas Mountains. In the cedar forests near Azrou, look out for Barbary apes in their natural habitat. Later, stop for a coffee break in the Alpine-style town of Ifrane before arriving in Fes by late afternoon. Drop-off at your accommodation marks the end of the tour.
